Co-Chairman

Mr. Malek oversees all aspects of Thayer’s activities, including strategy and investment policy, and is Chairman of the Investment Committee. Prior to the formation of Thayer in 1991, Mr. Malek served as President and Vice Chairman of Northwest Airlines from 1989 to 1991 after he co-led the successful buyout of Northwest Airlines in 1989, and Co-chairman of CB Commercial from 1989 to 1996 after leading the successful buyout of CB Commercial in 1988. In 1995, Mr. Malek led the acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company with Marriott as the lead equity partner. He also participated with George W. Bush in the acquisition and ownership from 1989 to 1998 of the Texas Rangers baseball team.
Mr. Malek joined Marriott Corporation in 1975 as a corporate Executive Vice President. Between 1980 and 1988, Mr. Malek was President of Marriott Hotels and Resorts. Earlier in his career, Mr. Malek was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. He currently serves as a Director of several publicly traded companies, including Automatic Data Processing Corp. and CB Richard Ellis. Mr. Malek is also the chairman of Thayer Capital Partners, a private equity investment firm focused on middle market buyouts with $1.4 billion under management.
In addition to his work in the private sector, Mr. Malek has had a distinguished career in public service. This culminated in 1992, when Mr. Malek served as Campaign Manager for President George H. W. Bush. Prior to 1992, he served President George H. W. Bush as Director of the 1988 Republican Convention and as Director of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, holding the rank of Ambassador. Mr. Malek also advised President Reagan as a member of the executive committee of the President’s Council on Cost Control, as a member of the President’s Commission on Private Sector Initiatives and as a member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Earlier, Mr. Malek served as a Special Assistant to the President and as Deputy Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
Mr. Malek is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in Vietnam. He received his M.B.A from Harvard Business School.
